Year 5 - Miss Hauxwell

Autumn 1 - A Child's War
Theme Overview & Knowledge Organiser 
For the launch of the theme, 'A Child's War', Year 5 visited Eden Camp. This trip enabled pupils to experiences the sights, sounds and smells of life on the Home Front and the Front Line, bringing history to life. 
On Tuesday 8th October, Year 5 led school's Harvest Festival Worship. They explained the meaning of HARVEST and each class shared the contributions they had received, which have been passed on to our local food banks. 
This half term, children have enjoyed taking part in Wilderness School. They have developed their shape, space and measure skills and enjoyed sharing stories around a fire, with hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows.  
We have completed one of our PROMISES, by making and flying paper aeroplanes. We tried a number of different variations. 

Autumn 1

This half term, Year 5 have taken part in lots of exciting activities. During Community Week, we looked at our local area and held a cake sale to raise funds for The Shack. We launched our topic, 'A  Child's War' with a trip to Eden Camp and returned excited and eager to learn more. We have learned about the Blitz, Evacuation, Rationing and the Holocaust. We were also lucky enough to take part in Wilderness School which primarily focused on Team Building. We also learned how to make a fire, safely.

 

Autumn 2 - Frozen Kingdom

Theme Overview and Knowledge Organiser

This half term, we have celebrated the festival Loi Krathong. It is a light festival celebrated in Thailand, on the full moon day in November. To celebrate, we invited a Buddhist Monk in to share more about his religion and traditions. 
On Monday 11th November, a group of Year 5 and 6 children represented our school, at St Mary's Remembrance Service. After the service, we spoke to veterans past and present. We look forward to attending again, next year. 
Year 5, enjoyed a trip to the Cinema to see 'How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World'.
As part of our theme, 'Frozen Kingdom', Year 5 had the opportunity to go Ice Skating. 

Autumn 2

Year 5 have been very busy this half term. The children have been out and about in the community sharing their talents. Some children attended a Remembrance Service to reflect on those who lost their lives during service, whilst other had the opportunity to sing at the Mayor's Christmas Carol Service. All of Year 5 have spread the festive cheer at the Hospital and some of our local care homes. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about 'Frozen Kingdom', particularly the historic element focusing on the Titanic. We rounded off the topic by going Ice Skating, also another one of our PROMISES.

Spring 1 - Stargazers

Theme Overview & Knowledge Organiser

Liz Million, a local artist, visited school. Within her workshop, she taught us the foundations for drawing a range of cartoon characters. We put this into practise back in the classroom and created astronauts and aliens.
This half term our festival focus was Black History Month. We had a visit from the UK's leading anti-racism educational charity, 'Show Racism the Red Card', which included a workshop explaining what racism is and how it affects other. Children also played some team games with some professional footballers.
As part of Mental Health Week, we had a visit from FIT4KIDS, where we learned about food traffic light labels and a range of different exercises to keep fit. 
We also looked at our own Mental Health and discussed how we could be more accepting of ourselves. As a class, we created this wordle, which includes all the things we could be more loving and accepting of. 

Spring 1 

Spring 1 has flown by. We have had lots of fun learning about Space and Astronauts, through our topic 'Stargazers', in addition to, Mental Health Week, a visit from Liz Million and Showing Racism the Red Card workshop.

Spring 2 - Pharaohs 

This half term, we had fun learning Judo.
For World Book Day, we enjoyed dressing up as our favourite book characters and shared our favourite book from home.
As part of our homework, some of the children have created their own Egyptian jewellery. 
We have also learned lots of new reading skills, during our weekly workshops from Premier League Reading Stars. 
On our last day together, we demonstrated excellent teamwork and creative skills.

Spring 2

Despite being a short half term, we have been working hard during our weekly SPAG and Mental Maths tests. Our scores have improved as has our confidence within these subjects. As a class , we have been settling down to work and engaging more positively with all the set tasks, drawing on our previous team work skills, from Wilderness School in Autumn 1. It has also brought a new element to learning; learning from home.
