British Values

Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain

St-John-Vision300
In our inclusive Church of England school, we value, seek to understand, and identify potential in everyone. Our vision sees St John’s School at the heart of the community with God at the centre of what we do with and for each other.

We promote Christian values which include: British democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs (and no faith) – alongside an appreciation and celebration of difference and diversity (reflecting all protected characteristics and social class). We promote rights and accept that with rights come responsibility.

Valuing our cultural heritage, we explore our local, regional and national heritage and British History, both positive and negative – learning from history and taking pride in positive contributions made

Our Community

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school community where everyone is welcome and differences are celebrated. Our local community is predominately White British with little diversity, but this is changing somewhat. All the children at our school speak English, but for a small number this is not their first language. We celebrate their differences and support them to thrive in our school.

We have children who practice other religions and no religion within our broadly Christian curriculum. We encourage our children to learn about other faiths and encourage tolerance and respect for those with different beliefs and ideas.

We celebrate all Christian festivals but also learn about Chinese New Year, Eid, Ramadan and Passover – often our children of other faiths are useful in educating their classmates. Visits to places of worship and visitors from other faiths helps with this understanding. Our whole school community (including parents) celebrate Christian festivals in St John’s Church as well as in school

Our children grow up in a variety of families and all are celebrated, understood and welcomed into our school community:

Our children have a good level of understanding of the different relationships that exist within families and treat all families equally.

We promote understanding and respect for democratic processes, individual differences and different cultures and traditions within society. We celebrate difference whilst understanding that we are all the same, so preparing our children to grow up as productive, empathetic and tolerant members of a multi-cultural Britain.

Everyone different, everyone loved’
